About the City or Neighborhood
Founded in 1826 as Bytown and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city was named the capital of the United Province of Canada by Queen Victoria in 1857. It remained the capital of a federation which grew into the prosperous G-7 nation we know today. The City's original boundaries have been expanded through numerous annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporated in 2001 which covers a significantly increased land area. Ottawa is built on un-ceded Anishinabe Algonquin territory. The peoples of the Anishinabe Algonquin Nation have lived on this territory for millennia. The city’s name "Ottawa" was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River, the name of which is derived from the Algonquin Odawa, meaning "to trade”.
